i drove to staunton yesterday to see my good friend rebecca petrie off to afghanastan.
it was really neat - she didn't expect anyone to come because her family lives so far away.
it was a fun surprise, but hard to say goodbye to someone heading into the unknown.

i've been back home one week.

and it feels like months.

while i was away, mitchell signed us up to audition for 'svu idol'.

so wednesday we showed up on our way to dinner with very low expectations.

but we were surprised with a 'golden ticket' to perform friday night.

friday night rolled around and i was scared out of my mind.

i hate getting up in front of people.

we were last to perform out of fifteen people. last.

two hours of agony sitting listening to other people, while my palms sweat out an entire lake.

(maybe it was a good thing layt wasn't there...embarrassing clammy hands)

finally we were up. we played a song we wrote.

everyone went crazy after. i am slightly under the impression it was more out of happiness that the show was finally over rather than our performance was good. but hey. i'll take it.

the judges gave us some positive feedback and then deliberated.

we were all up on stage to see what five performances would go on the the next round saturday night.

they called them out in order of appearance. when it came down to the last one, it would either be us, or the girl who sang right before us.

let me tell you - she was awesome. so we figured we lost, and before they even announced it we started talking about where we were going to eat saturday night.

but guess what. it was our names they called.

shock. we were in shock. we got off the stage and our friends attacked us.

it was such a rush. so awesome.

the only problem was. we didn't have any other songs, because we didn't think we'd make it to the next round.

so we spent all night and most of the next day trying to throw something together.

we were a little tired and rushed, so i didn't think we could pull it off.

we went to sushi, showed up for sound check, and then performed.

we didn't do our best - but we got it out.

it was so scary and fun.

we didn't win, but we got an honorable mention. wooo!

people keep asking when we're going to record.

so we'll see about that..

anyway. love the support from all my friends and loves...love.

random facts and things i love about layton:

-he has an unparalleled appreciation for music

-because of a scar, nothing grows in a spot under his chin - it's awesome

-he loves to be outdoors, and enjoys whatever weather God provides

-he is willing to read any book i throw at him (not literally)

-the song "close to you" by the carpenters was written for him (literally)

-little kids are attracted to layton like a hummingbird on nectar

-anything he wears - he pulls off (fashion wise, not physically)

-he is an incredible listener

-without even knowing it, layton says the funniest jokes

-he has an incredible taste in food (pun definitely intended)

-God made the softest hair in the universe, and then put in on layton's head

-layton laughs at my jokes (today i asked a patron at the library if being called a patron felt patronizing... he didn't think it was funny. layton would have laughed.)

-i have never met someone so keen on making sure all of my needs are met - i have never gone hungry or lacked sleep while under layton's care

-layton goes along with all my whims, even if they're ridiculous

-when people meet layton, they never forget him

-layton supported (and maybe even encouraged) my sweater phase - if that's not love i don't know what is

-watching layton watch modern family, is more fun than watching the show itself

-layton's real laugh always makes me smile, no matter my mood

-he never says anything negative about anyone else

-layton makes everyone feel loved

it is the first monday i've been able to sleep in
and not go to my 7 a.m. biology class.

it is six thirty in the morning.

this past weekend was great.

dinner, sushi, saturday's warriors, work, nutcracker, st, church, fiddler on the roof, talking with my family, chatting with emily, laughing with my roommates.

this semester has been so great, and i've met such amazing people.

i'm so grateful for my roommates and our little gang, and so blessed to have met layton.

finals are going to be a bit stressful - but i am ready to attack them best i can.

so i asked my friend to drop us off in lexington, a quaint town ten minutes away.

we had such a fun day.

i admit it was mostly window shopping, but we had some adventures along the way!


lexington had some great christmas decorations. they don't mess around.


probably one of the coolest bookstores ever.

layton finally got a haircut to fix the last haircut. so handsome.

in one of the stores we were shopping at, the owner asked if we were going to light the town christmas tree.

what does that mean you might ask?

well every year, the townspeople gather at the stonewall jackson cemetery to kick off the christmas season.

everyone gets a book of christmas songs and a candle.

then you sing whilst walking down main street.

the party ends at a quaint park with a decorated tree planted right into the ground.

then the mayor comes and says a few words, ending with the lighting of the tree!

then everyone drinks hot chocolate and cider while singing more carols. so small town.

of course we had to do it.

love it.

town gathering together. loved all the bundled children.


it was so dang cold. and sushi sounded so dang good. and it was.

we had thanksgiving at the may's apartment.

layton plays soccer with ben may, and we're all great friends!

it was nice to be in a home with a home cooked meal.

definitely missed being with the fam. a lot.

but i'm grateful for my friends here.

i'm going to start to attempt to recap thanksgiving break.

in a series of installments with pictures and words.

so i will start from the very beginning.

tuesday we had a ball. a basketball.

game.

at vmi.

we didn't lose too terribly, and it was nice to get away our first night of break!

then we went to the food lion to retrieve some greenery for thanksgiving.

thursday a group of twenty took the winding journey to lynchburg to experience the wonders of harry potter 7.

i was in that group.

the best part? the theatre was in a mall. and that mall had a forever 21.

and that forever 21 had the cutest coats ever.

and layton is good at picking out coats.

so i got one.

it will be featured in the near future.

also layton got to experience his first photobooth.

awesome.

but aside from that. it was so fun to be with my friends! waiting for the movie was hilarious. we waited for about three hours, and the movie was grand.

we got home at 4:00 am and mia and i woke up two hours later for our bio class.

joyous.

dna structure is way more interesting with two hours of sleep.

tuesday was one of those days you look back on and think

but heavenly father always sends me little reminders that i'm not alone.

layton came in the institute while i was studying for a bio test and told me the fam had his mission call.

right when he found out he was going to tokyo.

saturday night was movie night, and we went down to the school to watch inception.

we stayed up until midnight the night before so we could start out his nineteenth with a hug, a kick, and a dance (courtesy of lebo).

at the end of his big day we decided to get some ice cream.

after going through every other option first, layton and i decided to be jim and pam from the office for halloween.

partly because we lack any halloween costumes and partly because jim and pam are hilarious.

we spend a lot of time at the fields. mia's super happy about it.

one of my favorite trees. i can see it right outside my window.

layton got a hair cut from chris. twas sad seeing those luscious locks go.

i made brownies while i was waiting. i miss baking.

friday night was another soccer game! this time it was an away game.

lynchburg here we come.

mitchell told us we needed to stop at the next gas station.

i think he planned this.

it may or may not have been freezing.

i'm slightly obsessed with soccer now. sitting for two hours in the sometimes freezing cold makes me ridiculously happy. seriously. i look forward to these games like none other. i'm going to be sad when the season's over.
i decided i'm definitely going to be a soccer mom. my children will play.
as david would say. . .there's a reason it's called the beautiful game.

we had a fun time eating at macado's (pronounced macadoo's we found out.) after the game. getting out of bv is the best. and mitchell's always good about finding us a car. what a sweetie.

life's grand. classes are going well, my job's great, and i have the best of friends.
